Feeling Material XXXIV

Antony Gormley (born 1950)
(

)
,
2008

The sculpture Feeling Material XXXIV was donated to CERN by this famous artist in 2009. Gormley’s works are about place and our relation to space, inside and outside. He often uses moulds of his own body. Gormley describes his work as

"an attempt to materialise the place at the other side of appearance where we all live."

The sculpture Feeling Material XXXIV (2008) consists of iron spirals in which a human form can be discovered. It is hung over the central staircase in CERN's  main administration building, visible to everybody.
