Announcement of Collide International Awardees 2019
Collide International was created to foster creative collisions between art and physics, and to encourage advance knowledge in the arts. Collide International is Arts at CERN’s flagship programme and residency award, organised every three years in partnership with a city and a cultural organisation. With this new edition we celebrate a 3-years collaboration with the city of Barcelona that will spam from 2019 to 2021.
Dutch artist Rosa Menkman has been selected as the winner of the first Collide International award in Barcelona alongside four Honorary Mentions. According to the jury - comprised of Arts at CERN’s curator and head Mónica Bello, Oriol Gual, director of La Capella in Barcelona, Joana Hurtado, director of Fabra i Coats and Helga Timko, physicist from CERN - the winning artist demonstrated a sophistication of concept and approach. Menkman’s topic focused on the idea of ‘resolution’, which resonates with CERN’s quest to perform research from the smallest to the largest scale. The jury found Menkman’s argument about the significance and purpose of scientific measurement and how information is filtered in and out of an experiment inspiring. The artist will be invited to CERN in Geneva for two months to explore these topics, after which she will work for a month on a 3D video production at Fabra i Coats.
The Honorary Mentions are Samoa Rémy (Switzerland), Addie Wagenknecht (Austria), Nathan Witt (UK), and Barcelona-based artist Gabriella Torres from Puerto Rico. Their work presented abstract phenomena in tangible forms while demonstrating their ability to question and analyse the deeper meaning of physical observations. They all will be invited to take part in the Guest Artists visits in 2019 and 2020 consisting of 3 days specially-curated and research- focused stays at the laboratory.
The awards for this first edition will be presented on July 18th, 2019 at Sonar+D Barcelona at 18:40 with the participation of Mónica Bello, curator and head of Arts at CERN, and Joana Hurtado, director of Fabra i Coats Art Centre.
Arts at CERN has now signed an agreement with Barcelona City Council and the Institute of Culture of Barcelona to host Collide International from 2019 to 2021. Within this framework, a three-month residency will be awarded annually to an artist to extend their research at CERN by working together with particle physicists, engineers, IT experts and laboratory staff. Following this, the artist will be hosted for a month at Barcelona’s Fabra i Coats – Creative Factory, where they can expand their research, test ideas and engage with participant-led community projects.
