Leslie Thornton & James Richards

Guest Artists 2018

Belonging to two distinct artist generations and contexts, British artist James Richards (UK) and American artist Leslie Thornton developed their first collaborative project, 'Crossings', in 2016.

Leslie Thornton

Leslie Thornton is an American avant-garde filmmaker and artist born in 1951 in Knoxville, Tennessee (USA). Both her father and grandfather worked on the Manhattan Project, but due to the project's high level of secrecy, neither knew of the other's involvement until many years later. Thornton learned as an adult, and as a result, the atomic bomb and themes of apocalypse appear in some of her works. She works as a professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University and teaches at the European Graduate School.

James Richards

James Richards is a British artist who lives in Berlin and London. He studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art & Design, London, and in 2014, he was one of the four nominees for the Turner Prize for 'Rosebud', a 13-minute black and white video, which includes video clips and photographs taken from erotic books in a library in Tokyo, all of which have had the genitalia scratched out to comply with censorship laws.
